TYPES OF ANAESTHESIA:
The type of anaesthesia administered upon a patient is based on various factors like the type of procedure, the age of the patient, his/her health conditions etc. The different types of anaesthesia are:
-
General anaesthesia: This is administered during a surgery to render the patient a state that is very much akin to a deep sleep so that they do not feel anything. It can be administered orally, by using a face mask or through a plastic tube. Or it may also be administered through an intravenous line.
-
Local anaesthesia: This is commonly used to anaesthetise a particular part of the body where a particular procedure is being conducted. You will be conscious and more or less aware and you will not feel any pain. It can be applied when operating to remove a mole, suture a deep wound, or when correcting a broken bone.
-
Regional anaesthesia: In regional anaesthesia only the body part that is subjected to surgery is made insensitive to the feeling. First, an anaesthetic solution is administered locally into the vicinity of the nerves that mediate sensation in a given part of the human body. Then a regional anaesthesia is given.
THERE ARE TWO FORMS OF REGIONAL ANAESTHESIA:
-
Spinal anaesthesia: It consists of placing a single dose of the anaesthesia into the area surrounding the spinal cord (spinal fluid). This is accompanied with numbness in the lower body and may last up to six hours depending on the administered drug.
-
Epidural anaesthesia: This is similar to spinal anaesthesia and it is used to block the pain sensation from reaching the brain. It can be used particularly in surgeries involving the lower limbs or delivery process. An epidural may also be used for chest or abdominal surgery when a patient’s pain could remain severe for some time during the recovery period. In this case, the medicine is injected at a higher position that is at the upper back of the affected person.
POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS OF ANAESTHESIA
Most anaesthesia side effects are temporary and go away within 24 hours, often sooner. Depending on the anaesthesia type and how providers administer it, you may experience
-
Back pain or muscle pain.
-
Chills caused by low body temperature (hypothermia).
-
Difficulty in urinating.
-
Fatigue.
-
Headache.
-
Itching.

Sore throat (Pharyngitis).

Commonly Asked Questions
Is it safe to use anaesthesia during pregnancy?
It’s generally safe for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding (chestfeeding). Many pregnant people safely receive regional anaesthesia like an epidural or spinal block during childbirth.
- Do we get the service of an anaesthesiologist throughout a surgery?
Even before the commencement of surgery, an anaesthesiologist starts their work. The anaesthesiologist monitors all the vital parameters (Heart rate, ECG, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, body temperature) and ensures to maintain these parameters within safer limits.
- Can I have food immediately after surgery?
It is advisable to abstain from having any sort of food for around two hours to 4 hours to prevent post anaesthesia nausea. However if surgery involves opening of abdominal cavity or handling of intestines, oral intake may be delayed to more than 24 hours.
- Will I experience extreme pain once my anaesthesia is over?
After surgery, when the effect of anaesthesia diminishes, you may experience some pain and discomfort.
-Do I have to endure pain if I am under General anaesthesia?
No, you will not feel any pain during the entire surgical process if you are under general anaesthesia.
- How long does it take for general anaesthesia to start its action?
General anaesthesia usually starts its action in less than a time period of 30 seconds.
- Can I take my regular medications on the day of procedure?
If you are under any sort of medications, discuss with your doctor or anesthesiologist about whether to have them before surgery. Based on your health condition, your anesthesiologist may recommend certain adjustments to the medications.
- How long does it take to regain consciousness after administering anaesthesia ?
Is Anaesthesia advisable for a lactating mother ?
Anaesthesia is generally considered safe for breastfeeding mothers . Your healthcare provider might recommend expressing your first breast milk after general anaesthesia. Ask your provider if this is something you should consider.
Is it possible that anaesthesia is irreversible ?
Nearly impossible, once in tens of thousands of cases. Usually such a case is having extensive, uncontrolled medical disease, besides the problem which needs operation, usually this patient has come unprepared in the emergency. Usually, the risks are explained to attendants & their consent regarding the risks to the patient’s life is taken.
Why is ‘Fasting’ necessary before anaesthesia?
Before all procedures requiring anaesthesia, it is mandatory that the person should not take anything by oral route. Solid food (including biscuits, cookies, chocolates etc) and milk is not allowed for a minimum of six hours before anaesthesia. If taken within six hours and a person vomits or regurgitates, there are very high chances of stomach contents entering into respiratory passages leading to choking and death. Babies exclusively taking breast milk can be allowed feeding till four hours before anaesthesia. However clear liquids like water can be allowed orally till three hours before starting of anaesthesia.
