Sigmoidoscopy
A sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic test used to check the sigmoid colon, which is the lower part of your colon or large intestine.A sigmoidoscopy is performed using a thin, flexible tube called a sigmoidoscope which has a tiny light and a camera. It is put into your anus and moved slowly through your rectum into the lower part of the colon. The tube is used to blow air into the colon, which makes the colon swell up a bit to improve visibility.

Symptoms Of Sigmoidoscopy
Symptoms

Types of conditions
There are two main types of Sigmoidoscopy
Rigid Sigmoidoscopy
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
Rigid Sigmoidoscopy
- Rigid sigmoidoscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the sigmoid colon and rectum using a rigid, narrow tube called a sigmoidoscope.
- It allows direct visualization of the sigmoid colon and rectum to evaluate conditions such as hemorrhoids, rectal bleeding, polyps, or signs of inflammation.
SYMPTOMS OF TROUBLED SIGMOID COLON
-
Abdominal Pain Pain or discomfort in the lower left abdomen is a typical symptom of sigmoid colon issues. The pain may be crampy, intermittent, or constant and may worsen with bowel movements or changes in position.
-
Changes in Bowel Habits Alterations in bowel habits such as constipation, diarrhea, or changes in stool consistency (e.g., narrow or ribbon-like stools) may occur when the sigmoid colon is affected. This could be due to conditions like diverticulitis or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
-
Rectal Bleeding Bleeding from the rectum, often in the form of bright red blood on the surface of stools or on toilet paper after wiping, can indicate problems in the sigmoid colon, such as diverticulosis or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
-
Cramping and Bloating Cramping or bloating sensations in the lower abdomen are common symptoms of sigmoid colon issues, particularly conditions like diverticulitis or colonic diverticulosis.
RISK FACTORS
- Obesity
- Sedentary Lifestyle
- Smoking
- Family history of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or hereditary conditions such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or Lynch syndrome
- Chronic Constipation or Diarrhea
- Previous Abdominal Surgery
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
- Long-term use of certain medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or corticosteroids
PREPARING FOR SURGERY
Before a test, inform your healthcare provider about any pregnancies, allergies, medications, bleeding history, or blood-thinning medications. They will provide instructions on how to prepare your bowel for the test, such as using laxatives, enemas, or rectal laxative suppository, or drinking a special fluid. Sign a consent form and inform your healthcare provider about any bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medications.
During The Process
-
Your provider will do a rectal exam to check for any blood, mucus or stool. He or she will also gently dilate (enlarge) your anus.
-
Your provider will slowly insert a lubricated tube into your anus and move it into your rectum and the lower part of your colon. After the lower part of your colon is checked, the tube will be removed.
-
Air may be injected into your bowel to improve visibility. A suction device may be used to remove liquid stool.
-
A sigmoidoscopy may be done together with an anoscopy (a test to check your anus) or a proctoscopy (a test to check your anus and rectum). If another test is done, a special tube will be inserted to check your lower rectum or anal canal.
RECOVERY
-
If you were given a sedative, you will first be transferred to the recovery area where you can rest and have a drink.
-
You will usually recover in about an hour but this depends on how much sedative you were given.
-
You should be able to return to work the next day unless you are told otherwise.
-
The healthcare team will tell you what was found during the sigmoidoscopy and discuss with you any treatment or follow-up you need.
-
Regular exercise should improve your long-term health. Before you start exercising, ask the healthcare team for advice.

Commonly Asked Questions
What does a sigmoidoscopy test for?
A sigmoidoscopy may also be used to take a tissue sample or biopsy. And it can be used to remove polyps or hemorrhoids (swollen veins in your rectum and anus). It is also a screening test for colon cancer and rectal cancer.
What is the difference between a sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy?
A sigmoidoscopy is less invasive, because it only looks at the lower part of your colon. A colonoscopy looks at the entire large intestine.
How long does a sigmoidoscopy take?
A flexible sigmoidoscopy exam typically takes about 15 minutes.
Is a sigmoidoscopy test painful?
You might be uncomfortable, but the procedure isn't typically painful. People aren't usually under sedation during a sigmoidoscopy, so your doctor might ask you to shift every so often to make it easier to move the scope.
Is sigmoidoscopy safer than colonoscopy?
Flexible sigmoidoscopy is quicker, safer, less complicated, and cheaper than colonoscopy. Intravenous sedation is usually not needed and enemas used for preparation are associated with fewer side effects and greater acceptability
