Has blood pressure become a great pressure for you ? Thinking of ways to manage it effectively ?

In order to maintain a healthy body, one has to constantly monitor your blood pressure. A blood pressure chart is a tool used by healthcare providers to keep track of your blood pressure.

You can figure out if your blood pressure is at a healthy level and take necessary proactive steps to tackle your blood pressure by referring to a blood pressure chart.

Curious to know more about a Blood Pressure Chart ?

In this blog, Karetrip will help you understand the significance of the blood pressure chart in monitoring blood pressure.

Understanding Blood Pressure Reading

  • Blood pressure is usually measured in mmHg (millimetres of mercury). Basically a blood pressure reading consists of two numbers.

  • Once after the heart has a contraction and when the pressure is at the highest, the first number (systolic pressure) is measured.

  • Before the heart has a contraction and when the pressure is at its lowest, the second number (diastolic pressure) is measured.

  • In the blood pressure reading of 120/80 mm Hg means 120 is the systolic number, and 80 is the diastolic number.

Chart showing different blood pressure readings

Your blood pressure reading will determine which blood pressure category you belong to. Blood pressure readings below 120/80 mm Hg are considered a healthy blood pressure range.

Anything below 90/60 mm Hg is considered to be low blood pressure.

In cases of hypotension, a diastolic blood pressure reading of 60 mm Hg or below is considered low blood pressure, even if your systolic blood pressure reading is 120 mm Hg, which is considered normal

The five blood pressure ranges recognized by the American Heart Association are:

  • Normal

  • Hypertension stage 1

  • Hypertension stage 2

  • Hypertensive crisis

The following blood pressure chart is devised by American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Cardiology (ACC)

Blood Pressure CategorySystolicand/orDiastolic
NormalBelow 120andBelow 80
Elevated120-129andBelow 80
Hypertension Stage 1130-139or80-89
Hypertension Stage 2140+or90+
Hypertensive Crisis180+and/or120+

Normal blood pressure readings by age and gender

Blood pressure readings can vary by age and gender.Blood pressure readings for children vary based on factors like size and age.

To determine whether a child’s blood pressure levels are normal, a healthcare provider will typically use a blood pressure chart that takes into account children’s height, age, and sex.

Children typically have lower blood pressure than adults, as blood pressure tends to increase with age. For instance, what is normal blood pressure for a 13-year-old female may be considered low blood pressure for a 65-year-old male.

The charts below show normal blood pressure for children, and for adults according to age, both male and female. Diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) are included in the charts.

In 2017, the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association updated their guidelines to recommend men and women ages 65 or older aim for a blood pressure lower than 130/80 mm Hg.

As of 2022, however, the ideal blood pressure for seniors is considered to be 120/80 (systolic/diastolic), which is the same for younger adults. The high blood pressure range for seniors starts at hypertension stage I, ranging between 130/80 and 139/89.

By understanding the normal blood pressure ranges according to age, one can identify patterns, detect potential health risks, and take proactive measures to maintain cardiovascular well-being.

Regular blood pressure checks, adhering to a healthy lifestyle and adopting medical interventions when necessary are vital steps in preventing cardiovascular diseases and enhancing the overall quality of life.

Key Takeaways

A blood pressure chart developed by The American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology is used as a reference for managing blood pressure .

The chart offers ranges of systolic and diastolic blood pressure and their corresponding blood pressure classifications: normal, elevated, hypertension stages 1 and 2, and hypertensive crisis.

Based on the chart, normal blood pressure for adults is below 120/80mmHg.

The chart alone cannot diagnose high or low blood pressure.

Healthy blood pressure for men of age 18-39 is 119/70 mm Hg and that of women is 110/68 mm Hg.

Healthy blood pressure for men of age 40-56 is 124/77 mm Hg and that of women is 122/74 mm Hg.

Healthy blood pressure for men of age 60+ is 133/69 mm Hg and that of women is 139/68 mm Hg.
