Government Schemes for Women’s Health in India

India being a developing country, there are a number of government sponsored programs that have been adopted in order to improve the women’s health and to make the health care services easily available in the country.

Here are some key government schemes focused on women’s health

1. Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA)

  • Objective: To deliver public health services which may include giving contraceptives, giving free antenatal care to pregnant women in the second or third trimester to rural or hard to reach parts of the country.

  • Services: Such as, check-ups, investigations and advice from Obstetrician- Gynecologist in order to maintain a healthy pregnancy.

2. Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY)

  • Objective: To increase the proportion of women delivering at health facilities among poor pregnant women for the purpose of reducing maternal and neonatal mortality.

  • Benefits: Offers cash to women who want to deliver through institutional birth in government or empanelled private hospitals.

3. Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandarna Yojana (PMMVY).

  • Objective: To ensure that women are compensated partially their wages following their pregnancy to support them rest and recover from their pregnancy.

  • Benefits: Gives cash payments to postnatal women and women who are breastfeeding for the first time.

4. Mission Indradhanush

  • Objective: In order to provide coverage in children below two years and pregnant women for the recommended and essential vaccine preventable diseases.

5. Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK)

7. Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP)

8. National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular diseases, and Stroke (NPCDCS)
