Dr. Prathap Kumar’s educational journey began with his graduation in Medicine in 1988 from Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, followed by an MD in Internal Medicine in 1992. His passion for heart health led him to pursue a DM in Cardiology in 1997, and later, a Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology from the University of Turin, Italy, in 2002. Dr. Kumar’s expertise and innovative spirit were pivotal in establishing key cardiology departments at several institutions, including Benziger Hospital, Pariyaram Medical College, and PRS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He also served as the Director of Cath Lab Services at Manipal Heart Foundation in Bengaluru. Today, he leads the cardiology services at Meditrina Group of Hospitals, which has performed nearly 10,000 angioplasties, with half of them being complex cases.
Dr. Prathap Kumar’s commitment to making heart care accessible to all extends beyond his clinical work. He has been actively involved in initiatives to provide affordable care to underprivileged communities, conducting free cardiac camps and offering subsidised angioplasty services. In collaboration with the Malayalam newspaper 'Mathrubhumi', he launched the “Hridaya Sparsham” scheme, offering primary angioplasty for heart attack patients at a fraction of the cost, with free treatments available through donations. Dr. Kumar has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Excellence Award by Vivekananda Samskarika Samithi in 2015 and the Times of India Business Excellence Award in 2011. His pioneering work includes launching the first invasive cardiac centre in a tier II city and the first cardiac cath lab in the Republic of Maldives. Dr. Kumar’s contributions have set new standards in cardiac care, making him a trailblazer in his field.
